In the music of Deep Rumba tradition is a point of reference, no less but no more. Back home in Havana or Matanzas, the rumba is a music of neighborhood and solar, daily life, romance, and African spirits made Cuban, family stories, and dares among friends. It can’t be played without heart — but it should not be even approached without thought. It demands attitude — but be aware you also have to know your history.
This is a different neighborhood, a different life. We borrow memories here. We make up the past out of broken-down parts. We love in two languages. We also get tired of playing ourselves as others imagine us.
